651-771-8494 aruhnke@stjeromeschool.org
We are Learning About:
Reading: Some new concepts we have been working on are Rhyme Recognition, Blending Phonemes, Isolating Medial (middle) sounds, Substituting Initial Phonemes, and Deleting Phonemes. We continue to learn Onset Fluency (beginning sound), Blending words, Segmenting words, Letter Naming & the sound they make. We have learned theses letters: Aa, Cc, Dd, Ii, Ll, Tt, Rr, Nn, Ff, Pp, Hh, Gg, Oo, Bb, Mm, Ss, Jj, Vv, Ww, Ee, Xx, Yy, Kk, Zz, Qq, Uu.
Math: Topic 11: Subtraction. Vocabulary: subtraction sentence, take away, minus, minus sign, separate, left, difference, subtract. Please continue to help your child with Addition. It is difficult for many children, so you can help your child at home. An example would be to give your child 6 spoons and 4 forks, then your child should write an addition sentence and find the sum (6 + 4 = 10). You could use anything you can find around your house for your child to use to add.
Religion: We will learn about ”Prayer.”
Humanities: We will learn about, “Code of Hammurabi”
Science: We will begin a unit on Magnets!!
Star of the Week for February 10, 2020
Alyssa C.
A couple of times a month we will have a Star of the Week student in our classroom. This entitles the student to be the line-leader, to lead the morning calendar routine, to share/tell all about him/herself by filling in a poster. This will come home about a week or so before they are the star. A letter will also be included with the poster explaining all the special things the student will have an opportunity to do.
Memory/Sight Words
Memory/Sight words are words we find in every sentence we read. Students must know these words to be able to read a sentence. Students should memorize these words, NOT sound them out. Please practice these words every day, both reading them and spelling them.
a, I, to, the, in, it, is, at, as, on, and, you, be, of, we, for, if, do, he, she, me, my, us, up, an, am, by, or, go, no, so, see, all, but, can, not, are, his, her, was, like, love, him, look, did, has, get, got, had, that, they, with, saw, say, sit, any, ask, big, day, may, from, have, one, this
Candy Sale
If you would like to bring your child to mass/church to sell their candy bars, have them stand outside after mass, put on a nice big smile, and ask the parishioners if they would like to purchase a candy bar for $1.00. Our St. Jerome parishioners are very friendly and are very willing to purchase from our school children!!
If you need more boxes of candy, stop in the office and they will accommodate you. Also, if you open a box, you must sell all the candy bars. One Box=$60.
Reading At Home
By this time of the school year, your child should be reading out loud to you. Not you reading to them (although you may continue to read to them, that’s great), BUT, they NEED to be reading 20 minutes daily out loud to you).
Most Kindergarten students are reading at an A level or a B level. Some are at other levels. I told you what your child’s level is at conferences. Please, only use that level of books with your child, or they will become frustrated at reading because it will be too difficult, and they will not want to read. When your child is done reading the story, ask them comprehension questions so that they become familiar with the questions and you can see if they are understanding what they are reading. I went through some of the comprehension questions with each of you at conferences, also, so that you know what kinds of questions to ask your child.
You will find leveled books in the Scholastic book flyers. They usually come in packs with levels A, B, C, and D in a pack, or E & F ‘s in a pack if your child is reading at these levels. Otherwise if your child is reading at a higher level, you can search level____ books at your child’s level on the Scholastic website. Just remember to enter our classroom code: RGVYW. Usually the packs are around twelve books for $12-15 dollars, or 16 books for $16-20 dollars, which is a wonderful deal. Otherwise, you can go to your local public library and talk to the librarian and ask him/her for level A & B books.
When your child is reading at the right level, they should be able to read most of the words easily since many will be the sight words that they have been working on. The words they don’t know, they should “tap it out” or “stretch (sound) it out.” What I mean by this is: Let’s use the word “cat.” Your child should say the sound of each letter /c/-/a/-/t/ and “tap it out” using their fingers, or “stretch (sound) it out.” Then after they stretch it out, while tapping it, 3 or 4 times, then tell them to blend it together until they can say the word. They know how to do this. We have been doing this in class now for quite some time. Please don’t automatically tell your child the word. They NEED to be able to figure it out on their own. Let them use the techniques they have been taught in school first.
The more they do this, the better & faster they will get.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask me.
Scholastic Book Orders:
The February book flyer is coming home on today, Friday, Feb. 7th. Orders are due by Feb. 25th. If you would like to place an order, the easiest way to do so is online. Use code RGVYW. If you would rather fill in your order using the flyer, please send it back to school with your child with a check or cash for the total. Thank you!
All January Reading Logs were due on Monday, February 3rd. If you have not sent your child’s in yet, please do so today.
Cold Weather Information/School Closing
If Roseville Area Schools close because of the weather, then St. Jerome School will also be closed. School closings will be posted on the St. Jerome website and Facebook pages. On the radio, listen for ROSEVILLE school district. If they close, we close. Kids Korner is open on a space available basis. Call 651-771-1023 to arrange care.
Conferences
It was such a pleasure to meet with all of you at conferences. i always enjoy meeting with parents to discuss your child(ren). Thank you so much for all of your support you give to your child. Studies show when parents are involved in their child’s education, the child does much better academically. So, again, Thank you!
NWEA Testing
There were some technical difficulties with NWEA testing, so we were not able to take the tests on January 28th or the 31st. We were able to take the Reading test on Tuesday, February 4th, and we plan to take the Math test on Tuesday, February 11th. Thank you for your understanding!
Application for Financial Aid (TADS Application)

100th Day:
Our 100th day of Kindergarten will be on Thursday, February 13th. We will celebrate this by doing many things with the number 100! Please have your child bring in 100 things (items) such as marbles, cotton balls, candy pieces, etc., to show to the class!! Please make sure your child is able to carry the 100 items in their backpack or in their hands/arms. Thank you!
Valentine’s Day, February 14th:
We will be celebrating Valentine’s Day here in Kindergarten!
Please take some time with your child to make a Valentine box. I sent a shoebox home with your child if they said they needed one. Otherwise, use your own shoebox, or a box the size of a shoe box, and help your child decorate it any way that they like! Please let me know if your child did not bring a shoebox home and you need one. I do have more, and will send one home with your child. Your child may bring the completed/decorated box back to school on either Wednesday, Feb. 12th or Thursday, Feb. 13th, Please, don’t bring it back to school any earlier. Be creative. Use construction paper, tissue paper, buttons, stickers, noodles, cheerios, clothe, ribbons, etc. Make sure your child’s name is on the top of the box, and it is big enough for everyone to read it. Also, make sure there is a large enough slit on the top of the box for the cards to fit in. Have Fun!!
If your child plans to bring in valentines for their friends, they must bring one in for each student in our classroom. We don’t want to leave anyone out or have hurt feelings. (You can find a box of valentines for your child to give to others at the Dollar Store for $1.00). I will attach a list of all the students in our kindergarten class. (Please see below for the list all student’s names).
Also, if you would like to send in a Valentine treat for your child to share with the class, there are 19 students and 2 teachers!! Thank you!
