Ruhnke Review for 9/27/21

We are Learning About:

Reading: We have begun our new phonics curriculum, Groves. It is going well & the Kindergarteners seem to catch on to it quite fast! Much of what we are doing at this time is rhyming and each week learning a new letter and the sound it makes, also, handwriting. The students learn to write the new letter correctly in their handwriting practice book. This is very difficult for many Kindergartners. Please encourage your child to write the letter(s) the correct way so they will not have to relearn it. Thank you.

Math: We have begun & will finish Chapter 1: Sorting & Classifying/What is the same/alike…What is different. Vocabulary for this first chapter is: same, alike, different, sort, does not belong, sorting rule. Please work with your child so they know & understand these words/terms. I will do my best to explain here at school, but they need reinforcement from you, at home. Thank you. We will begin chapter 2 on Friday, Sept. 24. Chapter 2: Count and write Numbers 0-5. Vocabulary is: as many as, fewest, most, equal groups, count, one, two, three, four, zero, five, count.

Religion: There is One God—Trinity: The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We see God in the World Around Us-Creation! I am special to God Who made me! And, Actions & Attitudes:The Ten Commandments.

Humanities: We will learn about Creation & the seven days in which God created the world. Also, we will learn about “The Fall in the Garden of Eden” and “Cain and Able,”

Star of the Week for September  20, 2021 is

Ronan S.

Star of the Week for September 27, 2021 is

Penelope K.

A couple of times a month we will have a “Star of the Week” student in our classroom. This entitles the student to be the line-leader, to lead the morning calendar routine, to share/tell all about him/herself by filling in a poster. This will come home about a week or so before they are the star. A letter will also be included with the poster explaining all the special things the student will have an opportunity to do.

Welcome Kindergarten Families:

It has been wonderful meeting each of you and getting to know a little about you and your family! I know that Curriculum Night wasn’t what we usually do, but I do hope each of have taken the time to watch my video. I hope this helps explain many of the things we do here in Kindergarten and at Saint Jerome Classical School. Please, if you have any questions, feel free to email, call, or send me a note. Thank you.

Breakfast & Lunch:

All students will receive FREE breakfast every morning at St. Jerome School. They should arrive at 9:00 (or when the bus gets to St. Jerome), to receive their free breakfast. FREE Lunch, also, for all students! (This is through the Federal Government, pandemic relief fund program, until the end of 2021 or until the money has run out.)

Snack:

Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, & Fridays we have snack time, (although there will be exceptions. Some days we run out of time and we don’t get to our snack time. This doesn’t happen often, but I just want you to be aware of this. Thank you for your understanding). Please send a healthy snack (No chips, candy, cookies, or cakes, etc.) to school with your child. Students will eat their snack in the afternoon. Water will be provided.

Allergies:

We have a tree nut allergy in our classroom. Please do not send any tree nuts (we will include ALL tree nuts), in your child’s snack. Your child may bring these foods to school in their Lunch since we have a table for students to sit at because of any food allergies they may have.

Water Bottles:

Please send a water bottle to school for your child. Since the drinking fountains are not in use (because of Covid-19), if your child has a water bottle, we do have a water-bottle fill station. The ONLY liquid students may bring to school is WATER.  NO Kool-Aid, no flavored water, no pop/soda, no Gatorade, etc. Make sure to put your child’s name on the bottle!

Take-Home Folder:

Please make sure you are checking your child’s Take-Home Folder every day & removing any papers inside. Then make sure your child brings his/her folder back to school each day.

MASKS

Please, parents, make sure you are washing your child’s mask each evening before they come back to school with the same one! Thank you.

Great First Couple of Weeks in Kindergarten!!

We had a wonderful first couple of weeks in Kindergarten!! I have had a fun time with all of your children. I am so blessed to be the Kindergarten Teacher here at St. Jerome School with your fantastic children! I am loving each and every one of them!! I hope your child is enjoying Kindergarten as much as I am!!

Memory/Sight Words:

Your child will have approximately four(4) Memory/Sight words to learn each week. We have begun learning them starting this past week, September 20th.

Memory/Sight words are words we find in every sentence we read. Students must know these words to be able to read a sentence. Students should memorize these words, NOT sound them out. Please practice these words (4 each week) every day for 5-10 minutes, both reading them and spelling them.

Scholastic Book Orders:

Please feel free to order if you want to. I recommend the Leveled books A-D. They usually come in a package deal of about 12 books for $15-$24 dollars. Your child will be reading at these levels beginning this school year, and you will need to have these leveled books for your child. The October book flyer will be coming home next week. Orders are due by October 25th. If you would like to place an order, the easiest way is online. Use code RGVYW. If you would rather fill in your order using the flyer order form, please send it back to school in an envelope marked “Scholastic Book Order” with your child’s name on it. Put a check or cash in the envelope for the total $ amount, and I will place the order for you. Thank you!!

Help your Child with Shoe Tying:

Many Kindergarteners need their shoes tied several times a day. I will gladly help them, but to tie 17+ sets of shoes several times a day takes much of our learning time. So, if you would please work with your child to help them learn how to tie, it would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you.

Reading Log

September Reading Logs are due Friday, October 1st. I will send the October reading log home with your child on Monday.

Rake-A-Thon

The Rake-a-Thon is a way for St. Jerome School to earn money for books, Field Trips, and materials needed in the classroom. ALL students should participate. Students should collect $$ money from family members-Grandparents, parents, cousins, Aunts & Uncles, friends, neighbors, etc. then bring the $$ money into school on the “Tally Tuesdays” which are: September 28, October 5, 12, & 19th. On Wednesday, October 20th the entire school will go out into the neighborhood and rake lawns for those people unable to do this themself. This is a way we can give back to our community and earn money for our school. We ask that each student bring in whatever amount of $$ money they can-$1.00 or $100.00 dollars-or whatever they are able to give. We want 100% participation! If we get 100% participation, then we will get to play Turkey Bingo with all the students at St. Jerome!! And if our class has 100% participation, then we will get something special just for our classroom! So, please have your child collect & bring in whatever amount of $$ money they can to help our school. THANK YOU
