Ruhnke Review for 10/9/20

We are Learning About:

Reading: We have begun our new phonics curriculum, Groves. It is going well & the Kindergarteners seem to catch on to it quite fast! Much of what we are doing at this time is rhyming and each week learning a new letter and the sound it makes, also, handwriting. The students learn to write the new letter correctly in their handwriting practice book. This is very difficult for many Kindergartners. Please encourage your child to write the letter(s) the correct way so they will not have to relearn it. Thank you.

Math: We have begun Chapter 2: Count and write Numbers 0-5, and will finish up with it hopefully by Wednesday, October 14th. Vocabulary is: as many as, fewest, more & most, count, equal groups, same as, count, zero, one, two, three, four, five. We will begin Chapter 3 when we’re done with chapter 2. Chapter 3: Count and Compare Numbers 0-5. Vocabulary is: count, one, two, three, four, five, order, before, after, equal, greater than, less than, equal to, ordinal number, first, second, third, fourth, fifth.

Religion: Actions & Attitudes:The Ten Commandments. And, Love Others As God Loves You. Then we will do the chapter on God’s House-The Church, and The Church Leaders.

Humanities: We will learn about The Flood-Noah’s Ark, then The Tower of Babel, and then the Unification of Upper and Lower Egypt by Pharaoh Menes.

Star of the Week for October  5, 2020 is

Lu Pway D.

The Star for the week of October 19th will be

Dexter W.

The Star for the week of October 26th will be

Hser Nay

A couple of times a month we will have a Star of the Week student in our classroom. This entitles the student to be the line-leader, to lead the morning calendar routine, to share/tell all about him/herself by filling in a poster. This will come home about a week or so before they are the star. A letter will also be included with the poster explaining all the special things the student will have an opportunity to do.

Conferences

In your child’s Take-Home-Folder you should have received a letter stating when your child’s conference will take place. They will be either Monday, October 19th or Tuesday, October 20th. Please respect everyone and be on time. If you did not get a letter stating the time of your child’s conference then we have not received your form back letting us know when you would like to come in (either Monday or Tuesday). Please send this back right away! You are your child’s first teacher and I want to partner with you to make your child shine! As your child’s Kindergarten Teacher, I value the time I spend with your child helping them to learn. But, without YOU (parents), I could not do this alone. Together, WE, can help your child be the best he/she can be!! I am looking forward to meeting with each of you at conferences!!

Breakfast & Lunch:

All students will receive FREE breakfast every morning at St. Jerome School. They should arrive at 9:15 (or when the bus gets to St. Jerome), to receive their free breakfast. FREE Lunch, also, for all students! (This is through the Federal Government, pandemic relief fund program, until the end of 2020 or until the money has run out.)

Snack:

Every day we have a snack time, (although there will be exceptions. Some days we run out of time and we don’t get to our snack time. This doesn’t happen often, but I just want you to be aware of this. Thank you for your understanding). Please send a healthy snack (No chips, candy, cookies, or cakes, etc.) to school with your child. Students will eat their snack in the afternoon. Milk will be provided.

Allergies:

We have a peanut (tree nuts) and cherry allergy in our classroom. Please do not send any of these food items in your child’s snack. Your child may bring these foods to school in their Lunch since we have a separate table for these students to sit at because of any food allergies they may have.

Water Bottles:

Please send a water bottle to school for your child. Since the drinking fountains are not in use (because of Covid-19), if your child has a water bottle, we do have a water-bottle fill station. The ONLY liquid students may bring to school is WATER.  NO Kool-Aid, no flavored water, no pop/soda, no juice, no Gatorade, etc Make sure to put your child’s name on the bottle!

Take-Home Folder:

Please make sure you are checking your child’s Take-Home Folder every day & removing any papers inside. Then make sure your child brings his/her folder back to school each day.

MASKS

Please, parents, make sure you are washing your child’s mask each evening before they come back to school with the same one! Thank you.

Memory/Sight Words:

Your child will have approximately four(4) Memory/Sight words to learn each week. We will begin learning them starting next week, September 28th. Memory/Sight words are words we find in every sentence we read. Students must know these words to be able to read a sentence. Students should memorize these words, NOT sound them out. Please practice these words(4 each week) every day, both reading them and spelling them.

a, I, to, the, in, it, is, at, as, on, and, you, be, of, we, for, if, do he she, me, my, us, up

Scholastic Book Orders:

I recommend the Leveled books A-D. They usually come in a package deal of about 12 books for $15-$24 dollars. Your child will be reading at these levels beginning this school year, and you will need to have these leveled books for your child. The October book flyer is coming home today. All Orders are due by October 26th. If you would like to place an order, the easiest way to do so is online. Use code RGVYW. If you would rather fill in your order using the flyer, please send it back to school in an envelope marked “Scholastic Book Order” with your child’s name on it. Put a check or cash in the envelope for the total $ amount. Thank you!!

PLEASE!! Help your Child with Shoe Tying:

Many Kindergarteners need their shoes tied several times a day. I will gladly help them, but to tie 17+ sets of shoes several times a day takes much of our learning time. So, if you would please work with your child to help them learn how to tie, it would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you.

Rake-A-Thon

The Rake-a-Thon is a way for St. Jerome School to earn money for books, Field Trips, and materials needed in the classroom. ALL students should participate. Students should collect $$ money from family members-Grandparents, parents, cousins, Aunts & Uncles, friends, neighbors, etc. then bring the $$ money into school. On Friday, October 23rd the entire school will go out into the neighborhood and rake lawns for those people unable to do this themself. This is a way we can give back to our community and earn money for our school. We ask that each student bring in whatever amount of $$ money they can-$1.00 or $100.00 dollars-or whatever they are able to give. We want 100% participation! If we get 100% participation, then we will get to play Turkey Bingo with all the students at St. Jerome!! And if our class has 100% participation, then we will get something special just for our classroom! So, please have your child collect & bring in whatever amount of $$ money they can to help our school. THANK YOU!
