What We are Learning:
Reading: We have been working on our Rhyming, Onset Fluency (beginning sound), Blending words, Segmenting words, Letter Naming & the sound they make. We have learned the letters Aa, Cc, Dd, Ii, Ll, Tt, Rr, Nn, Ff, Pp, Hh, Gg, Oo, Bb, Mm, Ss, Jj. We have also been working on Language Awareness and Isolating the Final sound in a word. This last concept is very difficult for many students, so please work with your child on this. Say a word, then have your child say what the final sound is in that word. For example, say “game,” your child should repeat the word then say what the final sound is—/m/. Please encourage your child to write the letter(s) the correct way so they will not have to relearn it. Thank you.
Math: We will begin Chapter 6 after Christmas: Geometry: Two-Dimensional Shapes. Vocabulary: two-dimensional shapes, triangle, side, corner, square, rectangle, circle, hexagon, shape pattern, pattern rule.
Religion: 1. Advent (4th week)-Christmas is Jesus’ Birthday! 2. Love Others as God Loves You. 3. God’s House-The Church 4. Church Leaders 5. Wrong Choices-Sin 6. God’s Family-Baptism 7. Forgiveness is an Act of Love
Humanities: We will learn about, 1. God’s Covenant with Abraham, 2. Hagar and Ishmael 3. Sodom & Gomorrah 4. The Birth & Sacrifice of Isaac
Star of the Week for December 14th is:
Ku Nay H.
Star of the Week for January 4th is:
Sofia L.
Star of the Week for January 11th is:
Henry H.
A couple of times a month we will have a “Star of the Week” student in our classroom. This entitles the student to be the line-leader, to lead the morning calendar routine, to share/tell all about him/herself by filling in a poster. This will come home about a week or so before they are the star. A letter will also be included with the poster explaining all the special things the student will have an opportunity to do.
Reading Log
November Reading Logs were due Tuesday, December 1st. If you have not sent your child’s reading log in, please do so ASAP! The January Reading Log will be due the day the students return to school-January 4th. I will send the January reading log home with your child by the end of next week.
Allergies:
We have a peanut (tree nuts) and cherry allergy in our classroom. Please do not send any of these food items in your child ’s snack. Your child may bring these foods to school in their Lunch since we have a separate table for these students to sit at because of any food allergies they may have.
Memory/Sight Words:
Over the Christmas break, PLEASE work with your child on the Memory/Sight words, especially if your child is behind!
I figured it out that if you & your child practiced approximately 4 words per day over the 15 day break, then he/she would be caught up!!
Your child will have approximately four(4) Memory/Sight words to learn each week. Memory/Sight words are words we find in every sentence we read. Students must know these words to be able to read a sentence. Students should memorize these words, NOT sound them out. Please practice these words(4 each week) every day for 10 minutes, both reading them and spelling them.

2020 Christmas Caroling Program
Due to COVID-19, our Christmas program is going to have a new format. We are going to have “Parking Lot Carols” with all the St. Jerome School students. Thursday, December 17 beginning at 6:30, park your car in the SJS parking lot. Tune your radio to a special FM frequency (we will have the frequency when you show up), and listen to the wonderful songs sung by none other, than…Your Child!! The 8th graders will share the Nativity story from the Gospel of Luke and the grade levels will lead all of us in the carols. Don't worry...we'll have song sheets for you. We're inviting the parish too. Let's look forward to a beautiful night of song and celebration!
A few safety reminders:
1. Please do not leave until the caroling is all over. We do not want cars moving once the program has started.
2. Students will be singing with masks on, so be sure to have them come with masks.
3. We will not have access to the school or church unless in an emergency. So, make sure your child uses your bathroom at home before you come, please!!!
4. Dress your child for the weather. Remember, even if it is a mild December day, the evenings are cold without the sun.
Special Dress Days
On Tuesday, December 15th, the students may wear Christmas clothes (you decide what that may be—it could be wearing green, red & white. Or it could be wearing something sparkly, etc.). On Thursday , December 17th- dress in red & green. On Friday, December 18th-wear your PJ’s/Pajamas!!
Polar Express Day!!!
SHHHHHHHH!!! Please don’t tell your Kindergartner! I want this to be a surprise, so I will tell them on Thursday, December 17 before they leave school. Thank you!
