Ruhnke Review for 3/22/21

What We are Learning:

Reading: We have been learning to “Tap” out words. This is exciting since they will need to know this skill to figure out words they do not know. For example, using your thumb and fingers, to tap out the word ‘mop’ your child should tap the /m/ using their thumb and pointer finger, the /o/ using the thumb and middle finger, then the /p/ using the thumb and the third or ring finger. They would say each letter sound then blend it together to form the whole word! Practice this at home with your child. The more they do this, the quicker and better they will become at reading!! Also, We have been working on Phonics by learning Rhyme Production, Blending Phonemes, Isolating Medial (middle) sounds, Substituting Initial Phonemes, and Deleting Phonemes. We continue to learn Onset Fluency (beginning sound), Ending Fluency (ending sound in a word), Blending words, Segmenting Phonemes, Adding Phonemes, Letter Naming & the sound they make. We have learned all the letters of the alphabet.

Math: We have finished Chapter 17: Time, so now we are on Chapter 10: Addition Within 10. Please take out those addition flash-cards I gave you with the memory/sight words back in August!! Vocabulary: add, plus +, put together, equals =, addition sentence, in all, part, ten-frame.

Religion: Palm Sunday, Holy Week, Easter

Humanities: Joseph as a Slave, Famine in Egypt, The Twelve Tribes of Israel, The second Intermediate Period in Egypt, Code of Hammurabi, Hyksos Invasion of Egypt.

Extra Break Days Math Packet

Since St. Jerome closed school early for 4 days before Spring Break, a math packet was sent home to be worked on. If your child has not completed it, please help them to finish then return it to me, please!

Star of the Week for March 22nd is: Luke X.

A couple of times a month we will have a “Star of the Week” student in our classroom. This entitles the student to be the line-leader, to lead the morning calendar routine, to share/tell all about him/herself by filling in a poster. This will come home about a week or so before they are the star. A letter will also be included with the poster explaining all the special things the student will have an opportunity to do.

Reading Log

February Reading Logs Were Due On March 15th.

Please return them to me right away!

PLEASE stay on top of this. It is so important that your child is reading each and every day!! Thank you.

Winter Outerwear

Please make sure your child is coming to school every day with 1. Snow Pants 2. Boots 3. Mittens 4. Hat 5. Jacket. Spring in Minnesota is so unpredictable. One day it is sunny, beautiful and warm, the next day it’s cloudy, dreary, snowy, and cold! Please continue to send the 5 winter-outerwear until the end of April. The 5 items can stay at the school until we’re sure the students won’t need them anymore…this year! THANK YOU!

Scholastic Book Orders:

The March book flyers were sent home in your child’s Take-Home Folder before the Break. Orders are due on Monday, March 22nd. If you would like to place an order; the easiest way to do so is online. Use code RGVYW. If you would rather fill in your order using the flyer, please send it back to school with your child and with a check or cash (in an envelope marked “Scholastic Book Order”) for the total amount due. THANK YOU!!

Allergies:

We have a peanut (tree nuts) and cherry allergy in our classroom. Please do not send any of these food items in your child ’s snack. Your child may bring these foods to school in their Lunch since we have a separate table for these students to sit at because of any food allergies they may have.

Water Bottles

Please send a water bottle to school with your child. Because of Covid, all drinking-fountains are not in working order. Students get hot and thirsty. Without having a water bottle, it is hard to get a drink, and the school can’t hand out paper cups to 160+ students many times per day. Thank you.

Memory/Sight Words:

Your child will have approximately four(4) Memory/Sight words to learn each week. Memory/Sight words are words we find in every sentence we read. Students must know these words to be able to read a sentence. Students should memorize these words, NOT sound them out. Please practice these words(4 each week) every day for 10 minutes, both reading them and spelling them.
