What We are Learning:
Reading: We continue to “Tap” out words. The students will need to know this skill to figure out words they do not know, and thus, begin to read. Some students have a very difficult time doing this skill. PLEASE work with your child to help them with this. For example, using your thumb and fingers, to tap out the word ‘mop’ your child should tap the /m/ using their thumb and pointer finger, the /o/ using the thumb and middle finger, then the /p/ using the thumb and the third or ring finger. They would say each letter sound then blend it together to form the whole word! Practice this at home with your child. The more they do this, the quicker and better they will become at reading!!
Math: Chapter 18: Money. Vocabulary: coin, penny, nickel, heads, tails, cent, count on, total amount, dime, quarter. Money/coins can be very challenging for many kindergartners, so please help them with this by giving your child an item, such as a small toy, or an apple (or any piece of fruit), etc. then tell them it costs 53cents (or whatever amount-just make it under a dollar). Then give your child some coins-use pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters. Then have them find the coins that would make 53cents.
Please continue to practice addition and subtraction with your child. Without practice they will forget how to add and subtract and, as you know, they will need to know these math concepts for the rest of their lives. Thank you!
When we are done with money, then we will go on to Chapter 14: Measurement. Vocabulary: larger, smaller, taller, shorter, lighter, heavier, longest, shortest, between, temperature, hot, cold.
I want to let you know that we will be taking both the money and the measurement chapters faster than usual so that we can get them in before we take the math NWEA test. So, expect to see two math homework sheets some evenings. Thank you.
Religion: Jesus Is God the Son, Miracles of Jesus
Humanities: The ten Commandments, Amenhotep IV and Monotheism, Reign of Tutankhamon
Star of the Week
Every Kindergarten student has had a turn being the “Star of the Week.” So, from now until the end of the school year, each Day there will be a different student as the “Star of the Day!” They will help lead the calendar and morning routine, they will be the line-leader, and they get to be my “helper” for that day!!
Reading Log
March Reading Logs Were Due On April 1st
Please return them to me right away!
PLEASE stay on top of this. It is so important that your child is reading each and every day!! Thank you. The April Reading Logs were sent home earlier this week.
Scholastic Book Orders:
The April book flyers were sent home in your child’s Take-Home Folder yesterday. Orders are due on Monday, April 26th. If you would like to place an order; the easiest way to do so is online. Use code RGVYW. If you would rather fill in your order using the flyer, please send it back to school with your child and with a check or cash (in an envelope marked “Scholastic Book Order”) for the total amount due. THANK YOU!!
Allergies:
We have a peanut (tree nuts) and cherry allergy in our classroom. Please do not send any of these food items in your child ’s snack. Your child may bring these foods to school in their Lunch since we have a separate table for these students to sit at because of any food allergies they may have.
Send A Water Bottle, please!!
PLEASE send a water bottle to school with your child. Because of Covid, all drinking-fountains are not in working order. Students get hot and thirsty. Without having a water bottle, it is hard to get a drink, and the school can’t hand out paper cups to 160+ students many times per day. Thank you.
Memory/Sight Words:
Your child will have approximately four(4) Memory/Sight words to learn each week. Memory/Sight words are words we find in every sentence we read. Students must know these words to be able to read a sentence. Students should memorize these words, NOT sound them out. Please practice these words(4 each week) every day for 10 minutes, both reading them and spelling them.
