651-771-8494 aruhnke@stjeromeschool.org
We are Learning About:
Reading: Some concepts we have been working on are Rhyme Recognition, Blending Phonemes, Isolating Medial (middle) sounds, Substituting Initial Phonemes, and Deleting Phonemes. We continue to learn Onset Fluency (beginning sound), Blending words, Segmenting words, Letter Naming & the sound they make. We have learned theses letters: Aa, Cc, Dd, Ii, Ll, Tt, Rr, Nn, Ff, Pp, Hh, Gg, Oo, Bb, Mm, Ss, Jj, Vv, Ww, Ee, Xx, Yy, Kk, Zz, Qq, Uu.
Math: We will begin Topic 12: Larger Numbers. Vocabulary: eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, nineteen, twenty, odd, even, hundred chart, row, column, skip counting, count by 2s, count by 5s, count by 10s.
Please continue to work with your child on Subtraction since it is hard for many kindergartners. A way that you can help your child would be to give them something such as 8 pencils then take 3 away. Ask your child to write the number sentence (8-3=5). Then ask them what the difference is (5). Or give your child 10 towels, then take 6 away. Again, ask your child what the number sentence is (10-6=4). Then ask them what the difference is (4). You could use whatever you have around the house. Examples: cups, spoons/forks, paperclips, cotton balls, hair clips, etc. Please also continue to help your child with Addition. It is difficult for many children, so you can help your child at home. An example would be to give your child 6 spoons and 4 forks, then your child should write an addition sentence and find the sum (6 + 4 = 10). You could use anything you can find around your house for your child to use to add.
Religion: We will learn about ”Lent & the Stations of the Cross.”
Humanities: We will learn about, “Early New Kingdom in Egypt”
Science: We are learning about Magnets!!
Star of the Week for February 24, 2020
Prince Y.
A couple of times a month we will have a Star of the Week student in our classroom. This entitles the student to be the line-leader, to lead the morning calendar routine, to share/tell all about him/herself by filling in a poster. This will come home about a week or so before they are the star. A letter will also be included with the poster explaining all the special things the student will have an opportunity to do.
Memory/Sight Words
Memory/Sight words are words we find in every sentence we read. Students must know these words to be able to read a sentence. Students should memorize these words, NOT sound them out. Please practice these words every day, both reading them and spelling them.

Thank you for your Children!
I want to thank you for sending your child (children) to St. Jerome School. I am the luckiest Kindergarten Teacher because I have such wonderful Kindergarten students!! They all bring such unique gifts to our classroom! Thank you, parents, for working with and teaching your child(ren) all that will help them to be able to move forward throughout the Kindergarten year and into first grade, also to be polite, respectful, and kind to all. Thank you!! Your children are the best!! : )
All School Open House
We will be having an All School Open House on Wednesday, March 18th . It will begin after mass (around 10:45) until 3pm. Come and see what is happening in our school and our classrooms! Please tell your family and friends about St. Jerome School and how much you love it here! Let them experience the magic themselves by exploring our school while the halls and classrooms are alive with the hustle and bustle of the students and teachers and staff all doing what they do best: working hard and loving God!
Candy Sale
If you would like to bring your child to mass/church to sell their candy bars, have them stand outside after mass, put on a nice big smile, and ask the parishioners if they would like to purchase a candy bar for $1.00. Our St. Jerome parishioners are very friendly and are very willing to purchase from our school children!!
If you need more boxes of candy, stop in the office and they will accommodate you. Also, if you open a box, you must sell all the candy bars. One Box=$60.
Reading At Home
By this time of the school year, your child should be reading out loud to you, not you reading to them (although you may continue to read to them, that’s great), BUT, THEY NEED to be reading 20 minutes daily out loud to you).
Most Kindergarten students are reading at an A level or a B level. Some are at other levels. I told you what your child’s level is at conferences. Please, only use that level of books with your child, or they will become frustrated at reading because it will be too difficult, and they will not want to read. When your child is done reading the story, ask them comprehension questions so that they become familiar with the questions and you can see if they are understanding what they are reading. I went through some of the comprehension questions with each of you at conferences, also, so that you know what kinds of questions to ask your child.
You will find leveled books in the Scholastic book flyers. They usually come in packs with levels A, B, C, and D in a pack, or E & F ‘s in a pack if your child is reading at these levels. Otherwise if your child is reading at a higher level, you can search level____ (whatever level your child is at), books on the Scholastic website. Just remember to enter our classroom code: RGVYW. Usually the packs are around twelve books for $12-15 dollars, or 16 books for $16-20 dollars, which is a wonderful deal. Otherwise, you can go to your local public library and talk to the librarian and ask him/her for Leveled Books and tell the librarian what level your child is reading.
When your child is reading at the right level, they should be able to read most of the words easily since many will be the sight words that they have been working on. The words they don’t know, they should “tap it out” or “stretch (sound) it out.” What I mean by this is: Example: Let’s use the word “cat.” Your child should say the sound of each letter /c/-/a/-/t/ and “tap it out” using their fingers, or “stretch (sound) it out.” Then after they stretch it out, while tapping it, 3 or 4 times, then tell them to blend it together until they can say the word. They know how to do this. We have been doing this in class now for quite some time. Please don’t automatically tell your child the word. They NEED to be able to figure it out on their own. Let them use the techniques they have been taught in school first.
The more they do this, the better & faster they will get.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask me.
February Reading Logs are Due on March 2nd.
Scholastic Book Orders:
The February book flyer went home on Feb. 7th. If you need another flyer let me know and I will send one home in your child’s Take-Home-Folder. Orders are due by Feb. 25th. If you would like to place an order, the easiest way to do so is online. Use code RGVYW. If you would rather fill in your order using the flyer, please send it back to school with your child with a check or cash for the total. Thank you!
