We are Learning About:
Reading: Ask your child about the “Daily 5.” It is part of our Literacy block where the children go to 5 different centers relating to reading. The centers are: 1. Read to Self. I give the children books at their level to read to themself. They should read the story then retell the story. 2. Read to Someone. In this center the Kindergartener will read a book at their level to either a 2nd, 4th, or 5th grader. Then the older child will ask specific questions about the book to make sure the Kindergartner understands what they have read. 3. “Word Work.” This center is all about the Memory/Sight Words. The students have 4 choices of how they would like to practice these words. They can “Rainbow Write” the words, which means they may use 3 different colored markers to write the word making a rainbow! Or they can “Stamp” the words by using stamps with all the letters on them. The third way they can practice their memory/sight words is by using a small white board and marker to write the words. The fourth choice the students have is to use a magnetic board with all the letters of the alphabet and putting the letters together to make the words. 4. The fourth center is called “Listen to Reading.” In this center the children are using an iPad to go to the site “Raz-Kids” to listen to a story at their reading level. I have control over the site so that I can put in each student’s reading level and add more students if I need to, etc. The Fifth and last Center is the “Writing” center. In this center, students each have a writing binder that they put special writing paper in it to write a story about something that happened to them (a problem) in their life. Or they can draw a quick picture then label it, for example they could draw a dog then label the parts of a dog. Or they could draw a picture of their bedroom then label everything in their room. The other option for writing would be to make a list. we talked about what a list is and we made a list together of our favorite foods. So, they could make a list of their favorite things to do, a list of colors, or everything you would find in a kindergarten classroom, or a list of their friends, a list of farm animals, or zoo animals, or a list of kinds of dogs, etc. While the students are going to each center, I am taking small groups of students according to the outcome of the assessing I did in January which I spoke to each of you about at your child’s conference.
Some concepts we have been working on are Rhyme Recognition, Blending Phonemes, Isolating Medial (middle) sounds, Substituting Initial Phonemes, and Deleting Phonemes. We continue to learn Onset Fluency (beginning sound), Blending words, Segmenting words, Letter Naming & the sound they make. We have learned theses letters: Aa, Cc, Dd, Ii, Ll, Tt, Rr, Nn, Ff, Pp, Hh, Gg, Oo, Bb, Mm, Ss, Jj, Vv, Ww, Ee, Xx, Yy, Kk, Zz, Qq, Uu.
Math: We will finish Topic 12: Larger Numbers. Vocabulary: eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, nineteen, twenty, odd, even, hundred chart, row, column, skip counting, count by 2s, count by 5s, count by 10s.
When we are done with Topic 12, We will move on to Topic 13: Money. Vocabulary: penny, nickel, dime, quarter, dollar, cent, cent sign. Money is difficult for many Kindergartners. We have been working with all the coins except for the quarter since school began, but many still do not know the coins names or amount each coin is worth. So, please help your child to learn these. Thank you!
Please continue to work with your child on Subtraction since it is hard for many kindergartners. A way that you can help your child would be to give them something such as 8 pencils then take 3 away. Ask your child to write the number sentence (8-3=5). Then ask them what the difference is (5). Or give your child 10 towels, then take 6 away. Again, ask your child what the number sentence is (10-6=4). Then ask them what the difference is (4). You could use whatever you have around the house. Examples: cups, spoons/forks, paperclips, cotton balls, hair clips, etc. Please also continue to help your child with Addition. It is difficult for many children, so you can help your child at home. An example would be to give your child 6 spoons and 4 forks, then your child should write an addition sentence and find the sum (6 + 4 = 10). You could use anything you can find around your house for your child to use to add.
Religion: We will learn about ”Lent—Palm Sunday”
Humanities: We will continue to learn about, “Early New Kingdom in Egypt”
Science: We are learning about Magnets!!
Star of the Week for March 2, 2020
Micah S.
A couple of times a month we will have a Star of the Week student in our classroom. This entitles the student to be the line-leader, to lead the morning calendar routine, to share/tell all about him/herself by filling in a poster. This will come home about a week or so before they are the star. A letter will also be included with the poster explaining all the special things the student will have an opportunity to do.
Memory/Sight Words
Memory/Sight words are words we find in every sentence we read. Students must know these words to be able to read a sentence. Students should memorize these words, NOT sound them out. Please practice these words every day, both reading them and spelling them.

All School Open House
We will be having an All School Open House on Wednesday, March 18th . It will begin after mass (around 10:45) until 3pm. Come and see what is happening in our school and our classrooms! Please tell your family and friends about St. Jerome School and how much you love it here! Let them experience the magic themselves by exploring our school while the halls and classrooms are alive with the hustle and bustle of the students, teachers and staff all doing what they do best: working hard and loving God!
Uniform Policy
Parents, please make sure your child (ren) are wearing the school uniform to school each day. Many students have been coming to school not wearing their uniform. Uniforms establish consistency among the students and add to a culture of respect for one another and the pursuit of learning. Thank you!
