A Message From Ms. Ruhnke
Hello Parents!
I have so many mixed emotions right now. I’m sure you do, too and so do your children. All this came about so suddenly, we didn’t even have time for a proper “Good Bye.” I hope this newsletter finds all of you safe and healthy. I pray for each of you daily, and would you please keep me in your prayers, also? Thank you.
I will be doing a Daily Newsletter , (school days only) for as long as we are not able to physically be in school. In each daily newsletter, I will have links to videos that I have taken (please be patient with me, I am just learning how to do all of this. I am definitely a novice) with me reading a story (one or two each week), a video of the Kindergarten Time-Line Song, and a video of me teaching the lessons for that day. I ask that you have your child watch and listen to these and participate at home so that they will continue to learn. Please make sure your child has the materials they will need out and ready. For example, when we are doing our Phonics, they should have a pencil and eraser, their yellow and white Groves book, and their “Magnet Board” out and ready to use. For math, your child should have a pencil and eraser, and the large math page and the white sheet with “Practice” at the top ready. Since these are all on video, you will be able to “pause” the video, “rewind” or go back, or “Fast Forward” the video at your own discretion. Please make sure your child is watching and doing all the “Groves” or “Rhyming” with me each day. They should also be listening to the Humanities and/or Religion lessons daily. If you feel they can do the math without them watching me do the lesson, then you can “Fast Forward” that part. This is all brand new for me, so please be patient as I am learning this new technique. Thank you.
***This is VERY Important***
Every school day after your child has finished all the work, I will need you to send me an email with what your child did that day or send me a picture of the work they did. This is so that I can keep attendance. We NEED to have you respond every school day so that I can let the school know your child “attended school” that day. Thank you.
Also, please Save All Work your child does! I will collect it all on “Pick-Up” & “Drop-Off” Day: April 8th.
We are Learning About:
Reading: Read 20 minutes each day. Keep track using the Reading Log for March & then use the April Reading Log on Wednesday when April begins to keep track each day.
Phonics/Groves: Before you begin the video, the parent will need to find the 3 paper alphabets. You will need to take one and cut out each letter. Keep them in a bag when not using them. The 2nd paper alphabet will be your child’s “Magnet Board.” Your child should know what a magnet board is. I could not send the actual magnet board home, so the paper ones will have to do for now. The 3rd one is extra in case you need it.
We have been working on Phonics by learning Rhyme Production, Blending Phonemes, Isolating Medial (middle) sounds, Substituting Initial Phonemes, and Deleting Phonemes. We continue to learn Onset Fluency (beginning sound), Ending Fluency (ending sound in a word), Middle Sound, Blending words, Segmenting Phonemes, Adding Phonemes, Letter Naming & the sound they make. We have learned all the letters of the alphabet.
Memory/Sight Words: There are sheets in the folders I sent home that have the Memory/Sight Words on them. Please have your child complete these each week.
Writing: Your child should be writing one-two stories each week. They should only use pencil (even for the picture), and they should only be given at the most two minutes to draw the picture. Remind your child they should use a capital at the beginning of the sentence and there should be a period at the end of the sentence. Also, they should have a “finger space” between each word. Parents, you are NOT aloud to spell any words for them. They should “tap” out the word and “stretch” it out, then write the word as they hear the sounds. They know how to do this.
Math: Your child should continue using the math sheets I sent home on Monday, March 16th: Topics 1, 2, 3, & 6. In this first video with the lessons, I made a mistake and taught the lesson for Topic 14 lesson 1. Please ignore this part (you can fast-forward this math lesson) since your child does NOT have any of the papers or sheets that go with this lesson. We will begin Topic 14 after you come to pick up the next round of materials for your child on April 8th.
Religion: We will do a review of “Palm Sunday” and we will go on to learn about ”Holy Week.”
Humanities: We will do a quick review of Moses’s Birth” and “The 10 Plagues in Egypt.” Then we will learn about “The Exodus.”
Science: Please have your child watch one or two videos each week on the Scholastic site (below). Make sure your child is clicking on the comprehension questions, etc.
Star of the Week for March 30, 2020
Prince Y.
Prince was out ill most of the week that he was supposed to be the Star, so this week he will be Star!! This will be the last of all the students getting to have a week all their own.
Then, I will have one student be the “Star of the Day” each day. They will get to help with the morning calendar routine!
Memory/Sight Words
Memory/Sight words are words we find in every sentence we read. Students must know these words to be able to read a sentence. Students should memorize these words, NOT sound them out. Please practice these words every day, both reading them and spelling them.
