We are Learning About:

Reading: We continue our phonics curriculum, “Groves.” This program will be used the entire school year, then into 1st, 2nd, & 3rd grades as well. It consists of Rhyming, Onset Fluency (beginning sound), Blending words, Isolating the Final sound in a word, Segmenting words, Adding words, Deleting words, Substituting words, Letter Naming, & Language Awareness. We learn 1-2 new letters and the sounds they make each week. The students also learn how to write the letter(s) the correct way. They use their handwriting practice book for this. It is very difficult for many Kindergartners. Please encourage your child to write the letter(s) the correct way so they will not have to relearn it. Thank you.

Reading-CKLA: We have been listening and learning about Fables. We now know that a fable has a moral, or a lesson that it teaches. We still say/sing the Nursery Rhymes we learned since we love them so much! We don’t want to forget them, so please, continue saying/singing them with your child! We are now learning about our 5 Senses! Eyes to see, Ears to hear, Nose to smell, Mouth to taste, & Hands to touch/feel.

Math: We just finished Chapter 4: Count and write Numbers 6-10. Vocabulary words: count, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, order, before, after, equal, greater than, less than. We are now on Chapter 5: Count & Compare Numbers 0-10. Vocabulary: count, order, 1 more, count forward, count back, greater than, less than, sort, tally mark, tally chart, first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth, tenth, ordinal number.

Religion: All Saints Day-The Saints. Then we will do the chapter on God’s House-The Church, and The Church Leaders, then we will learn about making the wrong Choices-Sin.

Humanities: We will learn about “The Old Kingdom in Egypt, the “Call of Abram.” Genesis 12-13, and then “God’s Covenant with Abraham,” “Hagar & Ishmael,” “Sodom and Gomorrah,” then the “Birth and Sacrifice of Isaac.”

Star of the Week

Star of the Week for November 1st will be

Sven C.

Star of the week for November 8th will be

Ku Nay H.

Star of the week for November 15th will be

Po Nay T.

A couple of times a month we will have a “Star of the Week” student in our classroom. This entitles the student to be the line-leader, to lead the morning calendar routine, to share/tell all about him/herself by filling in a poster. This will come home about a week or so before they are the star. A letter will also be included with the poster explaining all the special things the student will have an opportunity to do.

Conferences: Thank You!

Thank you for the time we had together discussing your child’s amazing progress!! I am so proud of all the Kindergartners! They have really come far in such a short amount of time. Keep up the hard work, Parents & Kindergartners! Please continue to work on the Memory/Sight Words, Math homework & vocabulary, Reading to your child, and saying the Prayers. You are helping your child grow academically when you work with your child. I thank you, and they will thank you!

October Reading Logs are Due Monday, Nov. 1st.

Harvest Meal 2021

The Harvest Meal is an evening shared with other families from our school while eating a meal together. It will take place here at the school on Thursday, November 18th from 5-7 pm. Every family that comes (Please bring ALL: parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, grandparents etc.) should bring a dish to share that your family loves-enough for about 10 people. Let’s celebrate the love and blessings of our St. Jerome community!

Snack:

On Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, & Fridays we have a snack time, (although there will be exceptions. Some days we run out of time and we don’t get to our snack time. This doesn’t happen often, but I just want you to be aware of this. Thank you for your understanding). Please send a healthy snack (No chips, candy, cookies, or cakes, etc.) to school with your child. Also, please NO tree nuts since we have a tree-nut allergy in our classroom. The students may have tree-nuts for lunch, though, since we have a separate table for these students. Students will eat their snack in the afternoon. Water will be provided.

Allergies:

We have a tree nuts allergy in our classroom. Please do not send any of these food items in your child’s snack. Your child may bring these foods to school in their Lunch since we have a separate table for the students that have any food allergies.

Water Bottles:

Please send a water bottle to school for your child. Since the drinking fountains are not in use (because of Covid-19), if your child has a water bottle, there is a water-bottle fill station in the hallway at St. Jerome School, so we would like to encourage students to bring their own water bottle. The ONLY liquid students may bring to school is WATER.  NO Kool-Aid, no flavored water, no pop/soda, no juice, no Gatorade, etc Make sure to put your child’s name on the bottle!

Memory/Sight Words:

Your child will have approximately four(4) Memory/Sight words to learn each week. We will begin learning them starting next week, September 28th. Memory/Sight words are words we find in every sentence we read. Students must know these words to be able to read a sentence. Students should memorize these words, NOT sound them out. Please practice these words every day ( 4 words each week-none on weeks shorter than 4 days), both reading them and spelling them.

a, I, to, the, in, it, is, at, as, on, and, you, be, of, we, for, if, do he she, me, my, us, up, an, am, by, or, go, no, so, see, all, but, can, not
