What We are Learning:
Reading/Phonics: We have been working on our Rhyming, Onset Fluency (beginning sound), Final Sounds, and Middle Sounds, which are quite difficult for many. We also have been working on Blending the letter sounds to make words, Segmenting words into individual letter sounds, Letter Naming & the sound they make. We have learned the letters Aa, Cc, Dd, Ii, Ll, Tt, Rr, Nn, Ff, Pp, Hh, Gg, Oo, Bb, Mm, Ss, Jj, Vv, Ww, Ee. We have also been working on Language Awareness and Isolating the Final sound in a word. This last concept is very difficult for many students, so please work with your child on this. Say a word, then have your child say what the final sound is in that word. For example, say “game,” your child should repeat the word then say what the final sound is—/m/. Please encourage your child to write the letter(s) the correct way so they will not have to relearn it. Thank you.
Reading-CKLA: We are still listening and learning about Short Stories. Some more of these stories that we have heard and read in class are: “The Breman Town Musicians” & “The Wolf and the Seven Little Kids.” We are enjoying listening and discussing these stories! We still continue to say/sing the Nursery Rhymes we learned since we love them so much! We don’t want to forget them, so please, continue saying/singing them with your child!
Math: Chapter 10: Addition Within 10. Vocabulary: add, put together, in all, part, plus +, equals =, in all, addition sentence, addition pattern. When we finish Ch. 10, we will go on to Ch. 11: Subtraction Within 10. Vocabulary: take away, left, take apart, subtract, minus -, subtraction sentence, subtraction pattern.
Religion: 1. Wrong Choices-Sin 2. God’s Family-Baptism 3. Forgiveness is an Act of Love 4. Prayer 5. We will learn about the Mass.
Humanities: We will learn about, 1. “Early New Kingdom in Egypt,” 2. “Moses’ Birth” 3. “The Ten Plagues in Egypt” 4. “The Exodus”. 5. “The Ten Commandments” 6. “Amenhotep IV & Monotheism” 7. “The Reign of Tutankhamon.”
Star of the Week for January 10th is:
June P.
Star of the Week for January 24th is:
Christopher M.
Star of the Week for January 31st is:
Eh Moo S.
A couple of times a month we will have a “Star of the Week” student in our classroom. This entitles the student to be the line-leader, to lead the morning calendar routine, to share/tell all about him/herself by filling in a poster. This will come home about a week or so before they are the star. A letter will also be included with the poster explaining all the special things the student will have an opportunity to do.
Reading Log
The December Reading Log was due Monday, January 3rd. If you have not sent your child’s completed reading log in, please do so ASAP! The January Reading Log will be due Tuesday, February 1st. I will send the February reading log home with your child the last week in January.
Scholastic Book Orders
Scholastic Book Orders for this month will be DUE January 24th. The fliers came home with your child last week in their Take-Home-Folders.
Allergies:
We have a tree nuts allergy in our classroom. Please do not send any tree nuts in your child ’s snack. Your child may bring these foods to school in their Lunch since we have a separate table for these students to sit at because of any food allergies they may have.
Memory/Sight Words:
Your child will have approximately four(4) Memory/Sight words to learn each week. Memory/Sight words are words we find in every sentence we read. Students must know these words to be able to read a sentence. Students should memorize these words, NOT sound them out. Please practice these words(4 each week) every day for 10 minutes, both reading them and spelling them.
