What We are Learning:

Reading: We have been working on our Rhyming, Onset Fluency (beginning sound), Blending words, Segmenting words, Letter Naming & the sound they make. We have learned the letters Aa, Cc, Dd, Ii, Ll, Tt, Rr, Nn, Ff, Pp, Hh, Gg, Oo, Bb, Mm, Ss, Jj. We have also been working on Language Awareness and Isolating the Final sound in a word. This last concept is very difficult for many students, so please work with your child on this. Say a word, then have your child say what the final sound is in that word. For example, say “game,” your child should repeat the word then say what the final sound is—/m/. Please encourage your child to write the letter(s) the correct way so they will not have to relearn it. Thank you.

Reading-CKLA: We have been listening and learning about Short Stories. Some of these are stories we have heard and read to our children for many years, such as “The Three Little Pigs,” & the “Three Billy Goats Gruff.” We are enjoying listening and discussing these stories! We still continue to say/sing the Nursery Rhymes we learned since we love them so much! We don’t want to forget them, so please, continue saying/singing them with your child! We will continue to read & talk about short stories after the Christmas break.

Math: Chapter 8: Position and Location. Vocabulary: above, below, top, middle, bottom, over, on, under, inside, outside, beside, in front of, behind, next to, left, right, between. After Christmas we will begin Chapter 9: Break Apart Numbers 10 or Less, after Christmas Break. Vocabulary: Break apart, ten-frame, count, more.

Religion: 1. Advent (4th week)-Christmas is Jesus’ Birthday! 2. Church Leaders 3. Wrong Choices-Sin 4. God’s Family-Baptism 5. Forgiveness is an Act of Love

Humanities: We will learn about, 1. “The Second Intermediate Period In Egypt” 2.“Hyksos Invasion of Egypt” 3. “Early New Kingdom in Egypt.”

Star of the Week for December 13th is:

WILBERT S.

Star of the Week for January 3rd is:

Jasmine J.

Star of the Week for January 10th is:

Christopher M.

A couple of times a month we will have a “Star of the Week” student in our classroom. This entitles the student to be the line-leader, to lead the morning calendar routine, to share/tell all about him/herself by filling in a poster. This will come home about a week or so before they are the star. A letter will also be included with the poster explaining all the special things the student will have an opportunity to do.

Reading Log

The November Reading Log was due Wednesday, December 1st. If you have not sent your child’s completed reading log in, please do so ASAP! The December Reading Log will be due the day the students return to school-January 3rd. I will send the January reading log home with your child before the end of next week.

Allergies:

We have a tree nuts allergy in our classroom. Please do not send any tree nuts in your child ’s snack. Your child may bring these foods to school in their Lunch since we have a separate table for these students to sit at because of any food allergies they may have.

Memory/Sight Words:

Over the Christmas break, PLEASE work with your child on the Memory/Sight words, especially if your child is behind!

I figured it out that if you & your child practiced approximately 4 words per day over the 16 day break, then he/she would be caught up!!

Your child will have approximately four(4) Memory/Sight words to learn each week. Memory/Sight words are words we find in every sentence we read. Students must know these words to be able to read a sentence. Students should memorize these words, NOT sound them out. Please practice these words(4 each week) every day for 10 minutes, both reading them and spelling them.

2021 Christmas Caroling Program!!

All students are required to attend the Christmas program! Due to COVID-19, our Christmas program is going to have a new format again this year. We are going to have “Parking Lot Carols” with all the St. Jerome School students. It will take place on Thursday, December 16 beginning at 6:00pm. Come early to park your car in the SJS parking lot. Tune your radio to a special FM frequency (we will have the frequency when you show up), and listen to the wonderful songs sung by none other, than…Your Child!! The 8th graders will share the Nativity story from the Gospel of Luke and the grade levels will lead all of us in the carols. Don't worry...we'll have song sheets for you. We're inviting the parish too. Let's look forward to a beautiful night of song and celebration!

A few safety reminders:

1. Please do not leave until the caroling is all over. We do not want cars moving once the program has started.

2. Students will be singing with masks on, so be sure to have them come with masks.

3. We will not have access to the school or church unless in an emergency. So, make sure your child uses your bathroom at home before you come, please!!!

4. Dress your child for the weather. Remember, even if it is a mild December day, the evenings are cold without the sun. Warm coats, hats, mittens, boots are all strongly encouraged!!!

5. The very last song is sung by ALL the students at SJS! When the song is over, I’m asking that one parent please come over to me to take your child back to the car with you. It can be confusing for the younger children to try to find their car in the dark alone, and I don’t want any child to get lost and be afraid. Thank you!

Polar Express Day!!!

SHHHHHHHH!!! Please don’t tell your Kindergartner! I want this to be a surprise, so I will tell them on Thursday, December 16th before they leave school. Thank you!

Polar Express Day will be on Friday, December 17th. The students may wear pajamas, robes, & slippers!! We will be taking an imaginary ride to the North Pole. The afternoon activities will be based on the story, “The Polar Express” by Chris Van Allsburg.

January 2021 Testing

I will be assessing all Kindergartners beginning in January when they return to school. Here are some of the things that will be on the assessment so that you can work with your child during the break on them: 1.Capital/Uppercase & Lowercase Letters 2. Letter Sounds 3. ALL Memory/Sight Words we have learned up through next week. Check the “Ruhnke Review” for a list of the words. 4. Rhyming words 5. Blending letter sounds to make words 6. Their Reading ability/Level. 7. Numbers—Counting, Writing the numbers & matching numbers to objects. 8. Prayers: a)“The Sign of the Cross,” b) “Glory Be,” c) “Angel of God,” d)Prayer Before Meals—”Bless Us O Lord,” e) “Hail Mary,” and f) “The Our Father.” Thank you for your help!!
